Read Easy Stockport Coordinator

Read Easy Stockport provides free, confidential, one-to-one reading coaching from trained volunteers to adults who struggle with reading. We are looking for a Coordinator who is the first point of contact for those who want to learn to read. Using a simple assessment, the Coordinator will explain to a potential new reader how Read Easy may be able to help them. The Coordinator pairs up reading coaches with those who want to learn to read and provides ongoing support for reading pairs.

Role

There are no formal requirements for this role although you will be subject to Safer Recruitment procedures which include verification of identity and 2 references and an Enhanced DBS check. You need to be passionate about making a difference in your community by supporting others achieve either in their reading or coaching goals. You will need good communication and people skills with a commitment to maintaining confidentiality You would like to use your skills to support Read Easy Stockport and gain new skills along the way. You are flexible and have a couple of hours a week to spend supporting a great cause! You’ll be given lots of support and full training, meet a diverse range of people, and be part of a genuinely life-changing organisation. The coordinator role is often described as “the best role in Read Easy”, because it is so rewarding.

Organisation description:

We know that about 11,300 adults in Stockport can’t read or struggle with everyday reading such as food or safety labels, a letter from the hospital or a bus timetable. This may be due to a number of different reasons such as disrupted education, family problems, undiagnosed visual or hearing impairment, dyslexia and the intergenerational effect. Such adults also miss out on being able to read to their children or grandchildren. Read Easy is needed because people are ashamed to admit that they have a problem, especially if their previous experience of education was bad, and so they won’t join a formal class. They are often reluctant to seek help, feeling that it could affect job security if their boss found out or they would be labelled by others as ‘thick’. They prefer to rely on a family member or friend to read for them. Sometimes it is the removal of that support through bereavement or moving home that is the catalyst to seeking help from Read Easy. We are passionate about transforming more lives in the community through our proven, confidential programme of free, one-to-one, volunteer-led adult reading coaching. Becoming a volunteer for Read Easy is fun and fulfilling but requires commitment and passion. Reading pairs meet once a week for an hour in a local library or community venue. You’ll be given lots of support, meet a diverse range of people, and be part of a genuinely life-changing organisation. From experience, we know that learning to read really does change lives and being part of that process is special.
