Digital Champion at Monthly Carers drop-in - Heald Green

REF: 6a01b942d24f3

Signpost for Carers and Starting Point are teaming up to offer digital skills support for carers once a month in Heald Green, Stockport - can you help?

Would you like to help unpaid carers in Heald Green to get online or feel more confident using a computer? Tech genius NOT required!

Your everyday knowledge using a smart phone, browsing websites or using a computer at work is enough.

Have you helped friends or family to use their computer or phone?

Do you want to help your community?

Would you like a friendly volunteer role where you meet new people?

This volunteer is once a month, so it will suit someone who has limited time to volunteer, is local to Heald Green or can travel. It might suit you if you are trying out volunteering to see if you enjoy it, if you are using corporate volunteer hours spread across the year, or want to help out where you live.

If you are interested in running some simple, fun digital activities, you will have an opportunity to try this as well, such as doing online jigsaws, Wordle, or using fun photo editing apps ect.

Then this Digital Champion role is for you!

Role

Signpost support unpaid carers - so that's people who care for relatives or friends who are disabled or unwell. This monthly drop in offers support, a friendly chat, and a chance to have a brew with people who know how they feel.

Starting Point support people in Stockport with devices, data and digital skills -that's where you come in! We know there are carers at Signpost sessions who struggle with digital, but also don't have time or are not able to travel to our other sessions - that's why we are teaming up.

As a Digital Champion, you will be part of the Signpost volunteer team at their regular monthly drop in at Heald Green Village Hall. To get to know carers who come along to the session, you'll need to be willing to pitch in with non-digital tasks as well, such as chatting to carers, making teas and coffees, helping to set up furniture (if you are physically able to) and cleaning up at the end of the session.

We call these informal Digital Champion roles 'cafe chat' sessions, as the chat is as important as the digital support. This role will suit you if you love talking to new people, feel confident to start conversations, and can be proactive about offering support to carers. Around 1/3 to 1/2 of the time you will be offering help with digital problems. This may be more as you get to know more people, and they feel comfortable talking to you about their tech troubles!

You'll be helping carers feel more confident using devices, going online or completing everyday digital tasks they need to do. This could be applying for work online, booking an online GP appointment, using a new phone, filling in an online form, browsing the web, being safer online or using their emails more confidently.
Sometimes you may have to do some googling yourself to find a solution and work with Signpost staff or other volunteers. You'll make sure that carers you support are able to learn as much as they can and hopefully feel more confident next time a digital problem or task comes up!

Full training will be given for this role, and you will have support from staff when you volunteer. As a Digital Champion you will have access to Starting Point's digital guides, monthly top up training, and support from our volunteering lead.

We are hoping you will be part of a team of volunteers, as we look for 2-4 volunteers for each role. This means it’s a sociable role, but also we offer flexibility if you can’t always come along every month.
