For 23 years, first in France where we founded the charity and now in UK since our return to live in Stockport, we have helped poor Ugandan children to have an education and the chance of a worthwhile life. During that time we have built one primary school from scratch and renovated and expanded a second. We helped to found and construct what is now a fully functioning secondary school. Central to our work is our child sponsorship programme which has allowed hundreds of children to go to school when otherwise they couldn't afford to. This runs from infant level to university. On one primary school campus we have Little Angels Children's Home for orphans and other girls and boys in need of respite. At the second one, we have established a skills centre in support of school children and young people in the village community who cannot attend school. Central to this is our Abawaala Ku Mwanjo (Girls First) programme to help to level the educational playing field. Most recently we have inaugurated a support programme in favour of village women suffering from HIV. Their situation became far worse following the withdrawal of USAID. We are particularly keen to help pregnant and breast-feeding women, as well as the elderly. Our long-term objective is to allow our Ugandan colleagues on the spot to stand alone without the need for charity support. We are not there yet.
