Volunteer Mentors are human beings at their very best. They give around 2 hours a week of their time to support a young person age 16-28 who needs a consistent reliable adult for practical and emotional support. With support from people like you in their communities, many of our remarkable young people really flourish and grow. You don't need prior experience of youth work, as we offer extensive training covering the care experience, trauma, mental health, safeguarding and many other fascinating areas that help you to support the young person as well as they deserve. We have two intakes to our training programme per year - Feb/March, and September, for 8 weeks each time. We also excellent ongoing support and advice throughout. We'll need you to sign up to a two year relationship (many become ongoing friendships). Our mentor co-ordinators support you throughout - and we hold peer support meetings quarterly too, so you're never on your own with trickier areas like education, housing, mental health, relationships, boundaries or your own wellbeing!

Role

Volunteer Mentors work on a 1:1 basis with a young person who has left or is about to leave care (children's home or foster care). Together they tackle any issues the young person may be facing and celebrate achievements along the way. Young care leavers age 16-28 need access to consistent reliable adults in the local community that can offer 2 hours a week to focus on any practical or emotional needs the young person may have. All young people setting up home for the first time face challenges that are difficult to deal with alone, having a friendly trusted person to turn to can be life changing. We carry out an enhanced (adults and children) DBS check (having a criminal conviction is not necessarily a bar to volunteering, if you let us know then we'll talk it through). We'll need to see your drivers licence if you will drive the young person. We'll need two references later in the process

Pure Insight, young people leaving care (foster care, childrens’ homes), across Stockport who are placed into semi-independent living aged 17-18. Many care leavers start adult life with poor support networks, poor mental health, and uncertain employment and education provision. Pure Insight work to support their step into sucessful and happy adulthood, placing relationships at the heart of what we do, which is to offer mentoring, psychological wellbeing services, meetups, trips and activities, EET and young parent support in an incredibly accessible way. We’re close to our communities with volunteers being a key part of our workforce.
