Would you like to help more people in Stockport to get online or feel more confident using a computer? Tech genius NOT required! Your everyday knowledge using a smart phone, browsing websites or using a computer at work is enough. Have you helped friends or family to use their computer or phone? Do you want to help your community? Would you like a friendly volunteer role with lots of chatting and support from staff, with regular hours? Then being a Digital champion volunteer is for you! Digital champions usually sit with people in digital classes as they try using a computer, or carry out a digital task. You would usually be volunteering with other digital champions and paid staff to support. We give full training to all volunteers, as well as ‘top up’ training on current issues or things you need to know. Different organisations have slightly different ways that they work with Digital Champions,. Our roles change all the time, so get in touch with Clara, the volunteering lead for a chat about the different opportunities, or even to do our training and help others in your community. Contact Clara, Volunteer lead at Starting Point to find out more – clara@startpoint.org.uk Or call/ text Clara on 07874 042 365 or ring 0161 494 9947. Leave us a message so we know you’ve called, as we don’t return all missed calls.
Role
If you are friendly and enjoy talking to people that's brilliant. If you are patient and happy to explain how to do tasks on a computer that's perfect. If you've helped family or friends to learn something new, or trained someone at work to try a new task, that's great too. Tech genius not required! Previous volunteers have been people looking for experience before going back to work, retired people, students training to work in community or education settings, parents and carers looking for a volunteer role that fits in with their cared-for person, people with a disability wanting to volunteer within hours that work for them. It’s a great role for making new friends or getting to know your local community, and it can even fit in with corporate volunteer hours if you work full time, as it can be as little as one hour every week or fortnight! We welcome people with disabilities to volunteer with us, please talk to us about any reasonable adjustments we can make to help you volunteer. We welcome people who are learning English – you do need to read online information and feel happy to explain how to do digital tasks to other people. When:

Starting Point helps people to get online, or feel more confident using computers. We also run community events and support people locally with Community Organising. Our community activities have included sing-alongs, craft clubs, community events and kid's holiday clubs. We run Digital skills sessions and connect people to the National Databank to help with the cost of mobile data. We run a Digital device lending library and are part of the DigiKnow network, Stockport council’s project for Digital inclusion. Digital Champion volunteers help in Digital skills classes, or informally with friends, family or neighbours. We support other organisations in Stockport to have Digital champions, with our network of Digital champion volunteers across Stockport. You’ll be joining a friendly group of volunteers where full training is given for your role, plus we have regular socials if you volunteer with us!
