Venue Based Disco Volunteer Role

REF: 66e95e9e2b8f8

The Dementia Disco is determined to think differently about living with dementia. Using the power of music to engage our members with memories and to inspire conversations and friendships in a relaxed, social setting, we are committed to supporting those living with dementia to live their best lives.

Our mission is to continue growing and spreading awareness of the transformational effect of music on the brain – for everyone, and particularly for those living with dementia. Our dream is for there to be Dementia Discos across the country, providing support, advice and places for people living with dementia (and their carers) to connect with each other, relax and enjoy themselves.

In order to achieve that dream, we need support. We are looking for people to volunteer at our venue based discos or our mobile discos in care homes. It’s a hugely rewarding experience and requires very little time commitment beyond attending the disco.

Organisation description:

There is a wealth of evidence to support the idea that music can have a positive impact on people’s mental health. ‘Science shows it can help manage mood and anxiety, it can bring back memories and feelings, it can reconnect people to those they love.’ (Music for Dementia). Our aim is to use music to inspire memories, conversation, and friendships in and between people living with dementia. We hold monthly discos in the Stockport area. The discos are held at the weekends, in the early evenings. They are free to attend, and we provide a free meal. They are not restricted to the person with dementia and their carer, friends and family are welcome to come too. We are also starting to run mobile discos in care homes. These would be through the week, in the afternoon or early evening. Find out more here
