Communications and publicity volunteer to help promote digital skills sessions in libraries

REF: 6863ede52e23f

Starting Point have teamed up with Stockport libraries to offer digital skills support to people who need some help to feel confident to use computers and get online.

We know we could do more to reach the people who need this help - and that's where we need you!
Starting Point, Stockport Libraries and Digital Champions have come up with 25 ideas to get more learners along to library sessions, with your help we could do this sooner and better.

In this role you will get to use your skills to help others, learn new skills, and get real practical experience for your CV if you are looking for work. Alternatively, you could use your skills from work or life to support local people to get online, if you feel you have great communications skills already. You will be able to choose which tasks and activities from our list of 25 ideas you can help with. You could volunteer in our office or from home for this role.

You will have support from staff at Starting Point to do this role, as we will be doing all the tasks on our list, we just know we could do more with your support!

Role

We are looking for a volunteer who is happy to support with a variety of communications and publicity tasks.
You can choose to do tasks that you enjoy, although if you can help with more than one type of task, that would be very useful! You will get support and training to try new tasks, although we may also ask you to tackle tasks unsupervised once you have had some training. You don't have to have done this type of task before, if you think you have the skills to try, we'd love to hear from you.

Tasks on our list include:
- Researching and contacting local community organisations to share info about library based digital skills sessions.
- Supporting with putting flyers in venues across Stockport.
- Designing images for social media, posters and flyers using Canva (training given) following brand guidelines
- Attending meetings or community events such as summer fairs or info stalls to promote digital sessions
- Processing data when we ask people 'how did you hear about us?'
- Supporting staff and volunteers with collating feedback from learners on good and bad things about sessions.
- Supporting staff and volunteers to collect stories from learners to help encourage other people to join sessions. "If I can do it so can you" stories!
- Support staff to create press releases to promote digital sessions or feel good stories from learners and volunteers
- Supporting staff with social media posts promoting digital sessions
- Supporting staff and volunteers to create film clips and photos to promote library digital skills sessions

You do need to feel confident to use computers to do this role (for instance typing up information on Word documents , or sending emails) You do need to feel confident to work independently after some training. For some tasks, you do need to be happy to start conversations with people you haven't met before.

You are welcome to volunteer from home and in your own time for this role, but we may ask you to come into our office in Woodley, Stockport from time to time, depending on which tasks you are helping with, and your previous experience. If you would like to volunteer in our office, that's also great.
If you would find this travel difficult due to a disability, please let us know, and we can discuss adjustments.
Please bear in mind that our usual working times are Monday to Friday, so even if you do some volunteering at the weekend, we would ask you to occasionally be available during the week to support the team at Starting Point. This may also affect which tasks you can support us with.

You can choose what day of the week you volunteer, and for what times. However, we would ask you to stick to a regular day and time, so we know when we can contact you.
We are looking for someone who can volunteer for around 2 hours a week, (or 8 hours a month) but you can do a lot more if you want to!

This can be an ongoing role, or a summer role if you are studying and looking for volunteer tasks to do over the summer vacation.

We are happy to write a reference for you if you volunteer for us for a few months. We can also support you to identify how tasks done in this volunteer role match to job descriptions, if you are looking for work.
